Tommy James & The Shondells formed in 1959 in Niles, Michigan. They first called themselves The Echoes, then Tom and the Tornadoes with 12-year old Tommy James (then known as Tommy Jackson) as lead singer. In 1964, James renamed the group The Shondells because he thought the name sounded good. In February 1964 the band recorded the song Hanky Panky. It was released by a local record label. Although the band toured the eastern Midwest, the song was only a regional hit and The Shondells disbanded in 1965 after graduating from high school.
